The term "fear" can hold a number of meanings and is often used to express such things as phobias, feelins, or emotions. In her book titled Smile at Strangers: Lessons in the Art of Living Fearlessly, Susan Schorn reminds us that we have the power to overcome our fears, "Don't be afraid of the dark - grab darkness by the throat, kick its ass, push it down the stairs and laugh at its haircut."
Gavin De Becker describes the "true fear" that all humans possess as an innate response that warns us of danger.....also known as intuition. Intuition is nature's strongest survival signal and is never wrong. "As Americans we worship logic even when it is wrong and deny intuition even when it is right. Just as some things must be seen to be believed, other things must be believed in order to be seen." (De Becker, The Gift of Fear)
This type of fear - based on intuition - when trusted, can be lifesaving. We should listen to that feeling without wasting precious moments searching for validation. So when intuition speaks, give yourself permission to listen!
In response to a stressor, the sympathetic nervous system orchestrates what you familiarly call the fight-or-flight response. It increases muscle blood flow and tension, dilates pupils, accelerates heart rate and respiration, and increases perspiration and arterial blood pressure.
